Indian cuisine is famous for spicy and, mostly, vegetarian dishes. Who would’ve known there is such a thing as Indian desserts?. Most people would find it hard to name a dessert that is from India.
Indians may not give the impression of having a sweet tooth but most of them will confess to having just that. Indian desserts are as varied as their main dishes but their base ingredients are very common to each other. Dairy products like milk and yogurt, and different kinds of flour such as wheat flour and rice flour, are commonly used as base ingredients. With these added to a variety of fruit and nut, creates a huge selection of tasty desserts. Here are some of the Indian desserts that have gained popularity from across the globe.
1. RASGULA – is a typical example of a dessert predominantly made from milk originally from Orissa, a state found at the east coast of India. It is commonly known as Indian Milk Balls and is also called Rasbari in Nepal.
2. GULAB JAMUN – this is a popular dessert even in India. It consists of dumplings made of thickened or reduced milk soaked in rose colored syrup but you can also use saffron syrup or honey. It is usually eaten at festivals or in major celebrations. This dessert can also be related to the Tangyuan of China and the Loukoumas of Greece.
3. KHEER – is a rice pudding flavored with cardamom and nuts and is an essential dish in Hindu and Muslim feasts and celebrations. The term Kheer is derived from the Sanskrit word “Ksheer” which means milk.
Indian desserts are minimalistic in nature since the ingredients are easy to find, affordable and flexible plus it is easy to make, thus, making a perfect combination for a perfect concoction of a satisfying and blissful eating experience.
